I’ve never seen a story trip over itself to insert a last-minute “No see he was the hero all along!” justification for its evil main character. Kratos, who up to this point made it very clear that he had given no shits at all about humankind (he even verbally stated this in the game), rejects Athena’s demand and instead sacrifices himself in order to deliver the final piece of Pandora’s Box to the surviving humans: Hope. Seriously, there’s zero explanation what Athena had become or why she did such a massive heel-turn in the third game.

Athena then demands that Kratos give her the box for some.very unclear but seemingly nefarious purposes. To summarize: it turns out that Zeus and the other Gods, who had completely legitimate and justifable reasons for trying to kill Kratos, where actually possessed by some.evil black ooze from Pandora’s Box. God of War 3 and Kratos in general has gotten a lot of justified criticism for writing an irredeemable protagonist whose crusade for vengeance and disregard for humanity comes across as a spoiled brat who screams and kills at everything that looks at him sideways.īut I rarely see anyone criticize the actual ending of the game, which probably has the worst writing I’ve ever seen in a videogame:
